Days for Girls Nepal

A girl’s life, and the potential of a community, can be transformed through a small amount of education and the provision of a pack of washable period pads. Educate a girl, and you educate an entire community. She will share the knowledge she gains and, in time, will use it to educate her children. Preventing menstrual exclusion is vital to the welfare of the whole community and is surprisingly cost-effective at £10 for a washable period kit. We work closely with Days for Girls to send 2 representatives to the schools to provide kits and appropriate education to every girl.

Each kit includes

  • 6 cotton washable pads
  • 2 leak-proof washable liners
  • 2 pairs of pants
  • 1 waterproof bag for soiled pads
  • 1 bar of soap
  • 1 flannel
  • 1 cycle planner
  • 1 draw-string bag to keep everything in

Edutech Nepal

Remote communities have little equipment and few resources. We have visited schools that lack even the most basic equipment, such as blackboards. It’s impossible for teachers to deliver a modern education. This and the lack of facilities lead to teachers who are often from affluent cities becoming demoralised. Providing computer labs and smart software, teachers can access curriculum based subjects and access search engines, expanding teaching beyond basic IT skills. Children will have opportunities to go on to higher education and university or improved vocational training. The school and wider community must have a stake in the computer lab for long term success, which is why we insist they are responsible for the maintenance of buildings and furniture while we, together with our partner EduTech Nepal, guarantee maintenance of the computers and teacher training for 3 years.

Working with communities and expecting them to help with resources where they can build self-esteem and a sense of ownership, which just gifting equipment does not.

Each community and school is responsible for

  • Providing, decorating and maintaining a computer room in good order
  • Making sure all children have regular sessions using the computers
  • For a small, easily affordable charge, opening the computer lab to the wider community in the evenings for adult learning
  • Placing all monies raised from leasing the computer lab into a secure bank account that will be enough for the lab to be self-funding once the 3-year guarantor period has ended.
